See, I think this was one of Hermione’s crowning moments. With Lockheart, we know that there isn’t really a “cure” for the Memory Charm once it has been cast. Memories can be altered, but once something is gone, it’s gone. She erased herself from her family’s memory, meaning that regardless of whether or not she and the gang defeated Voldemort, she would never be able to return to her family. EVER. She will never get any kind of birthday card or well-wishes. She can never visit them on their birthday, she can’t visit them in the hospital, and she would never be mentioned at their funerals. She gave up her all of her familiar connections, the attachment she had for her caring family just to do the right thing and to protect them from the Death Eaters. At this point, she didn’t know that she’d be with Ron, she just knew that she would have to make it in the wizarding world with only the help of her friends and her own intelligence.
And can we take a moment to appreciate her acting here? I like the bit where she casts the spell, she turns her wand as if she’s locking a door. And then she looks around and realizes she is no longer welcome in her own home because she is no longer considered part of her own family, and her face conveys both her sadness and her sudden loneliness that she chose to shoulder for the sake of the family that cared so much for her. It’s just…gah! I love this part, the movie really did this bit justice.
